John E. S. Dallas (?-1952)
John E. S. Dallas was born in London. As a lad he enjoyed roaming the local countryside in search of natural history specimens. He joined the Civil Service after leaving school and as a young man travelled abroad to pursue his natural history studies. Later he travelled with his wife and friends observing plants, butterflies and birds, usually in Switzerland and adjacent countries. He joined the LNHS at the invitation of J. Ross and in 1927 became Chairman of the Ornithological Section. In 1933 he was elected President of the Society and remained so for 3 years. Later he became long term Vice-President of the Society.
Despite being mainly an ornithologist, he was also a very capable botanist, entomologist, successful lecturer and skilled photographer.
J. E. Dallas contributed ten specimens to the LNHS gall collection.
