Edmund Browne Bishop

Edmund Browne Bishop (1864-1947)

E. B.  Bishop was a member of the Society for about 50 years. Born in Dorset, he joined the Society in 1896. He was an enthusiastic supporter and from 1921 to 1924 was elected President. He was an all-round naturalist, but his principle interests were botany and archaeology. He contributed to the Society’s botanical records and was an editor of the ‘Botanical Records of the London Area’ for many years.
He did a great deal of specialist work on the Genus Rosa. His fine collection of roses was left to the Natural History Museum.
On his death many books were bequeathed to the Society and in 1948 his herbarium was left partly to the Natural History Museum (7000 specimens) and the balance to LNHS. The latter specimens are now held by the South London Botanical Institute (SLBI) and can be accessed through Herbaria United

E. B. Bishop contributed eight specimens to the LNHS gall collection.
