Montague Niblett

Montague Niblett (1878-1967)

Niblett joined the Society in 1926 and remained a member till his death in 1967. He regularly attended indoor and outdoor meetings often taking a leading role. He served as Chairman of the Plant Galls Section for many years. With fellow members, Burkill and Ross, he worked on gall causers. However, Niblett had been gathering galled plants and rearing the inhabitants for many years before his LNHS membership.

The many articles he wrote gave him an international reputation for original work on rearing gall insects of the Hymenoptera and Diptera and for experimental work on the alternate generations of the gall causing Cynipidae. His papers on the gall causing Hymenoptera cover a quarter of a century.
He donated galls and their insect causers to the British Museum (Nat. Hist.).

He was a Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London from 1946 to 1964. He read papers to this Society and conducted small parties of enthusiasts at field meetings. He prepared exhibits for indoor meetings and always helped young students when he could.
He was elected President of the South London Ent. & Nat. Hist. Society in 1936 and an honorary member of the LNHS in 1961.

Niblett contributed one specimen to the LNHS gall collection.
