Herman Spooner

Herman Spooner (1878-1976)

Spooner was born in Essex. He became a student gardener, first at the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens then at Chiswick and afterwards at Kew. Later he joined the Chelsea nursery of James Veitch as a botanical assistant. He compiled material for the unique volume, Hortus Veitchii (1906), a record of the many introductions made by the firm from the plants sent back from other countries by its collectors. His name is commemorated in Clematis spooneri Rehder & Wilson (1913). Most of his life, however, was spent as curator of the exhibition galleries at the Imperial Institute in South Kensington.
He joined the LNHS in 1922 and became Vice-President in 1930.

H.  Spooner contributed one specimen to the LNHS gall collection.
